Honoring Our Legacy, Celebrating Our Unity: A Memorial Day Reflection

As we observe Memorial Day, Atlanta Black Pride stands in remembrance and deep gratitude for the countless brave individuals who gave their lives in service to this nation. Today, we especially honor the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) service members whose sacrifices have too often gone unrecognized in mainstream narratives.

Our communities have long stood on the front lines—not only in times of war but also in the ongoing fight for equity, justice, and dignity. The spirit of Memorial Day is not just about remembrance; it’s about unity, resilience, and collective strength. It is a time to reflect on the courage of those who came before us and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of a more inclusive and compassionate future.

At Atlanta Black Pride, we recognize that the freedoms we enjoy today were made possible through the sacrifices of many. This day serves as a reminder of how interconnected we are and how vital it is to celebrate and protect each other—especially within our diverse and vibrant BIPOC LGBTQ+ communities.

So today, as you gather with family and friends, light up the grill, or take a moment of quiet reflection, we invite you to do so in honor of those who gave all. Let’s uplift their legacy through love, unity, and pride.

With love and remembrance,

Terence Stewart
